icipe is an intergovernmental organisation funded by government aid agencies, UN organisations and private foundations to carry out research and training in environmentally sound and sustainable management of arthropods for improved health and agricultural productivity in the tropics.

icipe has approximately 350 staff to support its research and capacity building programmes, located at various sites in Kenya and Ethiopia.

icipe wishes to urgently recruit a suitable person to fill the position of Graphic Artist to be based at Duduville campus, Kasarani, Nairobi. This is a local (national) position that offers a two-year contract that is renewable.

The main objective of the position is to provide quality services in typesetting, design, layout and graphics for all icipe publications and in particular provide expertise in the graphics and imagesetting area as DTP Designer/Imagesetter.

Reporting to the Director of Finance and Administration the Graphic Artist will perform the following duties, among others:

Responsibilities
  • Typeset, design and format layouts of texts for manuscripts, newsletters, brochures and other icipe publications, using desktop publishing and graphic design software.
  • Prepare and suggest layout for icipe logos, publications covers and master copies.
  • Design icipe business cards, staff IDs, advertisements and special occasions cards as necessary.
  • Conceptualise and produce colour schemes for various icipe publications, posters, advertisements and information material.
  • Liaise with the Scientific Illustrator and Typesetter regarding control and design of originals for printing.
  • Keep a small inventory of desktop publishing and graphics design software, and report to SPO in new software needs acquisition.
  • Produce work and liaise with scientists and other professional staff on completion of tasks.
Requirements
  • Be a holder of a Bachelor’s degree in Arts/Design.
  • An advanced certificate in Computer Graphics/DTP.
  • Proficiency in using Apple Macintosh computers is mandatory.
  • Working knowledge of graphics design software packages.
  • At least five years working experience as a Graphic Artist in an international organisation or newspaper.
  • Work with minimum supervision.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Proficiency in computer skills (MS Office suite in addition to DTP expertise).
  • Proficiency in the most important professional graphics design software, such as Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat and Illustrator, and CorelDRAW, is essential.

GOAL is seeking a consultancy for evaluation of its child protection and education sectors.


Background:

GOAL is an international non-governmental, relief and development organisation.

GOAL began its operations in Kenya in 1983. GOAL’s current programmes include a multi-sectoral Programme of Support for Children and Youth in Difficult Circumstances in Nairobi’s informal settlements.

Education:

GOAL’s education sector addresses gaps in access to and quality education in Mukuru, Korogocho and Dandora slums by building the capacity of schools to address the needs of vulnerable children and youth and improving the learning environment.

GOAL also supports out-of-school children and youth to promote matriculation and retention into formal schools. Adult education and parents livelihoods training to increase the demand and support for education in target communities is also implemented.

Child Protection:

GOAL’s child protection programming aims to put in place appropriate interventions to empower children and the community on issues of child rights.

The overall objective is to contribute towards improved child protection services in Kenya.

This is to be achieved through promotion of activities geared towards effective provision of child protection; rehabilitation and reintegration services for child abuse survivors and vulnerable children; scaling up of child protection operations through enhanced partnership, networking and collaboration with local organisations; and to enhance the quality of interventions through mainstreaming of child protection.

Purpose of the Evaluation:

GOAL intends to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the two sectors to assess the following:
  1. Effectiveness of the programme in meeting its stated objectives and outcomes.
  2. Identify the strengths of the programme and define areas for improvement,
  3. Provide a basis for accountability to beneficiaries, partners, donors and the general public.
Timeframe: This evaluation should be completed within approximately 5 weeks. Start on 24 November 2011 and a final report submitted by 9 January 2012.

Scope of Work: The evaluation seeks to measure the outcomes of interventions undertaken in the current phase of GOAL Kenya’s Programme of Support for Children and Youth in Difficult Circumstances (2007-2011).

The position

PICOTEAM seeks to recruit a Research Officer to coordinate the implementation of a project entitled ‘Network for Enhanced Market Access by Smallholders in Eastern and Southern Africa’ (NEMAS).

The project objective is to ‘enable decision makers and implementers to make informed choices about the most effective ways to support transparent, inclusive and competitive markets for agricultural inputs and produce’.

The overall goal is to ‘increase the impact of public and private investments in inclusive market access by smallholders in East and Southern Africa’.

Expected outcomes of the project are:
  1. Improved market efficiency enabling smallholder farmers to benefit from a greater choice of markets locally and regionally
  2. Scaling up of good practice in on-going and new investment programmes through effective cross learning and sharing
  3. Better social and economic returns of public investments in market access.
Responsibilities

The Project Officer will be responsible for the following:
  • Day to day management of the project, including:
  1. Taking lead role in the organization of workshops, meetings and other processes required as part of PICOTEAM role as lead facilitator of the project
  2. Undertaking electronic convening and moderation of discussions on specific topics/issues as may be required
  3. Proactively handling communication with project stakeholders
  4. Preparing project reports to donors and other stakeholders as may be required
  • Contribute to the collection, collation and synthesis of data or information (e.g. on best practices) that may be required as part of the project – as input into the project or output from activities of the project.
  • Contribute to the development and nurturing of local learning agenda:
  1. Visit projects and understand contexts, opportunities and challenges
  2. Make intellectual input into project content and processes
  • Perform other duties as may be required to deliver on the objectives of the project
Location: PICO-East Africa offices in Nairobi, Kenya, with extensive travel in eastern
and southern Africa.

Qualifications
  • A PhD degree in marketing or equivalent; or relevant MSc degree with postgraduate training in a markets-related field
  • Excellent understanding of smallholder agriculture in Africa
  • At least 7 years experience working with grass-roots organizations, and track record in participatory processes aimed at empowering communities and local organizations in addressing market access challenges
  • Ability to work in multi-institutional, multi-cultural contexts
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work with local organizations and farmers
  • Excellent computer skills (including MS office applications).
